Positively Support Your Children’s Time with the Other Parent

Sharing time between households isn’t just an adjustment for children. It’s also a big adjustment for parents. It can be incredibly hard sometimes to say good-bye knowing you may not see your children for days at a time or possibly weeks. This is another area in which what you say and what you do come into play. If you feel anxious about your children spending time in the other parent’s home, your kids will pick up on it. Even though you may sound as if you are supporting the children’s time with your ex, make sure you’re not sending your children mixed signals.

Ways to sabotage children enjoying time with the other parent: • Calling children excessively and/or expecting them to talk on the phone for long periods of time.

• Setting children up by saying things like:“If you get homesick and need me to come get you, I will.”

“I’m sorry but you have to go and see Daddy. There’s nothing I can do about it.”

“I wish you could stay here with me, but the judge said you have to go with Mom.”

“I will really miss you and think about you every minute you are gone.”
